Description

There is a shape that the sea has been making for millions of years. The AURO Skjell borrows it. A single shell, cast in gypsum plaster, mounted flush to the wall — and when the light comes on, it does something that no flat shade can do. The curved interior catches the light and holds it. The shell form is not decorative in the way that most decorative objects are. It is structural. The ridges and curves that give a shell its strength are the same ridges and curves that give the Skjell its character. The gypsum is white — a clean, matte white that reads as architectural rather than ornamental. Care & Maintenance

  • Wipe the iron backplate with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Dust the gypsum shell with a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush. Do not use wet cloths or cleaning sprays directly on the plaster — moisture can damage the surface over time.
  • The gypsum shade is paintable with standard emulsion or chalk paint if you wish to change the colour. Use a light coat and allow to dry fully before switching on.
  • Handle with care — gypsum plaster is durable but not unbreakable. Avoid sharp impacts to the shade.
  • Disconnect from the mains before cleaning or changing the bulb.
  • Indoor use only.

  • Q: Can the gypsum shade be painted to match my wall colour? A: Yes. Gypsum plaster accepts standard emulsion paint, chalk paint, and most water-based paints without primer. Apply a light, even coat with a soft brush, allow to dry fully, and the shade will hold the colour well. This is one of the practical advantages of a real plaster shade over resin alternatives.
  • Q: Does the E27 bulb come included, or do I need to buy one separately? A: The bulb is not included. The Skjell uses a standard E27 screw-fit base, which is the most widely available bulb fitting in the UK and Europe. Any E27 LED bulb will work — we recommend a warm white (2700K–3000K) at 4–6W to complement the 3500K CCT of the lamp's design intent.
  • Q: Does this need an electrician to install, or can I do it myself? A: The Skjell is a hardwired surface-mounted wall lamp — it connects directly to your home's mains wiring. Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician. It is not a plug-in lamp.
  • Q: Is the plaster shade fragile? Will it survive shipping? A: Gypsum plaster is more robust than it looks — it is the same material used in architectural cornicing and decorative mouldings, which are designed to last decades. Each Skjell is individually packed in foam-lined packaging for transit. Handle the shade with normal care; it is not fragile in everyday use, but a sharp direct impact can chip the surface.

How do I know what size to choose?

Every product page lists exact dimensions for each option. For wall art, your piece should fill roughly two-thirds of the wall space above your furniture — measure the width and multiply by 0.6 to 0.75. Hang it with the centre at eye level, around 150cm from the floor.

For lighting, a simple rule used by top designers: add your room's length and width in metres, multiply by 2.5, and that gives you the ideal fixture width in centimetres.

Pendants over a dining table should hang 75-90cm above the table surface.

Will the colours match what I see on screen?

We do our best to ensure accurate colour representation, but slight variations can occur due to screen settings and lighting conditions. Our products are produced to match the listing images as closely as possible.
